Staying Safe on Wee Walkies

Wee Walkies is a community platform — we connect pet owners and pet professionals directly. We do not verify businesses or their credentials, so it's important to do your own checks before paying anyone.

Always verify before you buy

Important: Wee Walkies is a community platform. We do not verify businesses, check their credentials, or take responsibility for transactions between members. The advice on this page is provided to help you make informed decisions. If you have been the victim of fraud, please contact your bank and report it to the relevant authorities.

Check their online presence first

  • Search for the business on Facebook, Instagram, and Google before paying anything.
  • A genuine business will have an active social media presence with real posts and engagement.
  • If their socials have been deleted or their website is gone, treat this as a red flag.
  • Look for Google reviews or reviews on other platforms.

Ask for references

  • Ask the business or pet professional for references from previous customers.
  • A reputable business will be happy to provide them.
  • Contact the references directly — don't just accept screenshots of messages.
  • Ask other members in the Wee Walkies community if they have used the business.

Meet in person before paying

  • Wherever possible, meet the business owner or pet professional in person before handing over any money.
  • For dog walkers, pet sitters, or groomers — arrange a free meet and greet first.
  • For pet product businesses — visit their premises or ask to see the products before buying.
  • Never pay for a service you haven't been able to verify exists.

Pay safely

  • Always pay by credit card or PayPal where possible — these offer buyer protection if something goes wrong.
  • Never pay large amounts upfront before a service has been delivered.
  • Be very cautious of businesses that only accept bank transfer — this offers little protection.
  • A small deposit is normal; paying the full amount before any service is a warning sign.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Prices that seem too good to be true.
  • Pressure to pay quickly or urgently.
  • No physical address or verifiable location.
  • Social media accounts that were recently created or have very few posts.
  • Reluctance to meet in person or provide references.
  • Asking for payment via unusual methods (gift cards, cryptocurrency, etc.).

If something goes wrong

  • Report the business to us using the "Report a Concern" link on their profile or our report page.
  • Contact your bank or card provider immediately if you believe you've been scammed.
  • Report fraud to Action Fraud (UK): actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.
  • If you're in Ireland, contact An Garda Síochána or the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
